The Scottish Government in the USA
Scotland and the United States share an enduring connection built through centuries of migration, trade, and cultural exchange. Today, more than five million Americans identify as having Scottish ancestry, and hundreds of Scottish heritage organizations across the United States help maintain and strengthen those connections.
The Scottish Government maintains an official presence in the United States through Scottish Government USA, based at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. Established in 2001, the office promotes Scotland’s interests in the United States through political, cultural and economic engagement.

Scotland’s relationship with the United States extends beyond government and business, and it connects to an active Scottish diaspora community across the country. With millions of Americans having Scottish ancestry, many individuals and families maintain connections with Scotland through heritage and cultural tourism.
The Scottish Government recognizes the importance of these global communities through its Scottish Connections Framework, which seeks to strengthen Scotland’s relationships with its international diaspora and with people around the world who have an affinity with Scotland.
Trade, Investment, and Education
The United States is a '“priority trade partner for Scotland.”
It is Scotland’s leading international export destination and its largest source of inward investment. Scottish Government USA works closely with Scottish Development International (SDI) to support Scottish companies seeking opportunities in the United States and encouraging American businesses to invest in Scotland.
Education and Research are also important parts of the relationship. Scottish Universities maintain extensive links with American institutions through research and academic collaboration, while thousands of students from the United States choose to study in Scotland.
